~grin, sketches bow~ It was my attempt to find Jack's voice. The game was going to be a steampunkish role-playing game (gods what shiny gears!!) and Mark (who was the one thinking of running the game) wasn't certain whether magic was going to be a part of things or not. Part of the lifeblood of steampunk being the magic in human invention and ingenuity, after all.
But just because there aren't *rules* for magic doesn't mean the average Victorian/Edwardian-era joe doesn't believe it exists. Especially when that joe (or Jack) is low-middle class English/Irish.
Hence this bit, assuming someone's chided Jack for being superstitious with the dish of milk on the doorstep.
