In Vino Veratis...
Jun. 15th, 2004 10:55 amFirst official SCA event this past weekend. Legends XIII, in Solhaven (which is to say ~Crawfordville, GA). Didn't go so much for the *event* as for Caelen & Liz, who also attended.
So. Having no responsibility except to look semi-period and be courteous to strangers, I had a blast. I couldn't do a Riverstages-esque play-by-play if I wanted to--would't know where to start.
Highlights:
~*~ Unintentionally fascinating a semi-random stranger, by doing nothing more than hugging him thank-you for helping us, and inviting him to the hospitality of our camp.
~*~The Muscadine wine...and strawberry, blackberry, blueberry, and apple ciders... that Reese found at a little(and I do mean little--he operates out of two metal buildings that, combined, aren't the size of a singlewide trailer. His fields, on the other hand, extend to the horizon around the shacks.) winery in the middle of nowhere, Georgia. I have the address on one of the bottles; you who live in Chattanooga might feel adventuresome someday. Trust me--you won't regret it.
~*~Being the enlightener instead of the enlightened for one conversation's space.
... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ...
Hard to find the right words to expound on what's going round in my head and heart about that conversation. Most of the ones that come to mind give me lockjaw and paralyse my fingers before they hit the light... So.
We'll go with these:
When, for me, the end is inescapably near, I would sooner my lifebreath were taken away by a friend than forced in and out of my shell by some unnatural means. I don't think I'm alone in that desire.
... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ...
Home again home again with that darkly peaceful thought on my shoulders. Got freelance work scheduled for this weekend, theoretically. The stranger's interest has reminded mein husband that his wife is more than a laundress and ferrywoman. Life's alright.
