Up to my wrists in caustic water and dye again today, huzzah! And one of these days, I'll figure out 1)why I continue to mix dye without gloves on, resulting in tinted fingertips for days on end, and 2)why everything works more smoothly in the Process if I have Celtpunk blaring.

I love the balance between exacting procedure and wing-and-prayer chaos in bound-resist dying; mixing colours just so, folding fabric just so and tying it just thus, soaking it in just this strength of caustic water...and then you lose almost all control of the process. You can guess what the colours will do and how far things will bleed pretty well (and the guesses improve with experience), but once the dye's on, all you can do is wait for it to cure and hope it turns out like you meant it to or better.

And more than I love that controlled chaos, that prepare-and-pray...I love having something interesting to show for the work, something not everyone realises they could create. Something that makes my little boy's eyes light up. Something unusual. Such fun...

Got pieces cut out for the squeaker-gift I'm making for a friend, as well, so that'll start coming together soon, and there'll be pictures once it's sent off and received and all that. Dae's discovered the sewing machine (don't recall whether I've mentioned that already...), and I've promised to wait on using it for anything till he's here to watch. ~grin~

Hm.
Speaking of things Dae's had fun watching:
Shirley Bassey, doing "Get This Party Started"

It was interesting. We watched that one, then this one (Pink doing the same song, live).
Then I asked which he liked better.
"The second one!"
"What did you like about it?"
"The guitars and the girls climbing the silks."
"Was pretty cool, wasn't it?"
"Yeah! Which did you like?"
Which stumped me. Because I liked both of 'em--the odd wonderfulness of a strong, clear voice sauntering through that song, turning all its sharp angles into fluid curves is awesome to me, but so is knowing that Pink tours with an honest to god band and doesn't lip synch. Makes my throat hurt to listen to her, but I still like her style.
So I told him that.
And he nodded and bounced and asked for another Shirley Bassey vid.
~proud smile~

What a kid.
