There's a Philip K. Dick-esque story in this, but it would have to be handled with a Ha Jin-esque style to hit the spot.
How would it be to wake up one morning and realise that an entire populace had completely forgotten you existed, when once they had all known your name? How would it be to know that any attempt by you to be known would result in someone's punishment--either yours or the people you were trying to connect with? How would it be to know that the person you loved best in the world was the one allowing/encouraging this to happen?
Would it be a relief? A death? A rebirth? Anything?
I wonder what Peng Liyuan thinks of the proposition.
